Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given

Adoration of the Shepherds by Anton Raphael Mengs

A Christmas Poem

by Catherine Doherty

You who are

Lonely,

Seeking,

not finding.

Everlastingly

Hiding

your search

from all men.

Plunge

Into the silence

Of this

Night

so tender.

Surrender to it.

You who are

Lonely,

Seeking,

Not finding,

Come to the

Crib,

Holding

A Child

For all

To see,

Yet shrouded

In the

Deepest

Of mystery.

You who are

Lonely

Seeking

Not finding,

Fall on

Your knees!

You search

Is ended.

The night

So tender.

The crib

So simple

With the

Child in it

Is what you seek.

  1. I had not heard of Catherine Doherty before reading the poem that you posted. An interesting overview of her life can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_Doherty
(which has links to other CD-related sites).
Some aspects of CD's biography remind me of Dorothy Day.
